Howdy from soggy Arizona. The rain they have been predicting for weeks finally got here.
I guess that's one way to forecast weather. Keep saying it's gonna rain until it does and then say "I told you it was gonna rain".
They got it so easy here in the summer
Hot or now, extreme heat. There, I just gave you the weather forecast for May thru September. Write it down.

Good Wednesday Morning, Kids!
The sun has not shown itself for a few days, but it does look like the rain may hold off for a day or two here in the PNW before reappearing for the weekend… Here in Western Washington we forecast in similar fashion to @Lots O Fords in Arizona, but in reverse… the prognosticators sing “The sun will come out, tomorrow…” until one day it finally does… Its kind of weird that our northern east-west route (HWY 20) has not closed for the season yet, as it usually closes about now until Mar-April.

Traveling is done for now through the holidays, with the exception of a quick overnight trip or two across state to see kids. Still thinking about a possible month down south after January departs, as I have the joy of a colonoscopy to look forward in the early new year… yay!

Have a great day, all!

Good Morning Everyone! I haven’t even had enough coffee yet! And for everyone who doesn’t know me…no coffee means no parameters!! I didn’t forget my travel mug so hopefully I’ll be fully awake by the time my infusion is done. Then I’m heading off to have coffee with friends. Then doing a photo shoot with a local artist to make limited edition prints for her to sell. Once I wake up it should be a fun day. Have a great day everybody!!!

Ok, here's a Roseta Stone for some of what we talked about:

MOS = Military Occupational Specialty (bet you know that one. They break down in this discussion as follows:

11B = Infantryman - Core infantry MOS
this is followed by a number for enlisted folks as follows:
• 1 = Private / Specialist / Corporal (E1–E4)
• 2 = Sergeant (E5)
• 3 = Staff Sergeant (E6)
• 4 = Sergeant First Class (E7)
• 5 = Master Sergeant / First Sergeant (E8–E9)
Then we add a P for parachute qualified, the Army calls that Special Qualification Identifier.
Therefore, for example a 11B2P would be an Infantryman that's a Sergeant and is parachute qualified.

An 11F4P is an F instead of a B. That's a a role that the Army no longer uses. It's an Infantry Operations & Intelligence Specialist. Specialty infantryman trained in reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, target acquisition, and patrol leadership.

In 1969 there was a transition from LRRP (Long Range Recon and Patrol) teams that were just units within each Division (101st, 1st Cav, American, etc.) into Ranger Companies. Mostly C/75 and L/75 (C and L company of 75th Ranger). LRRPs fell under divisional S2/G2 (Intelligence). At that point, a lot of us were transitioned from 11F3P to 11F3V.

What Ranger Companies (C/75, L/75, etc.) actually did:

They continued the same missions as the LRRP teams:
  • Deep reconnaissance
  • Target location for artillery/airstrikes
  • Ambush operations
  • POW snatches
  • BDA (bomb damage assessment)
  • NVA trail interdiction
  • Hunter/Killer reaction missions
But now they carried:
  • Ranger unit designations
  • Ranger lineage
  • Ranger tab wasn’t earned in Vietnam units (that was separate), but they were still Ranger companies by title and lineage.
A typical Ranger team (formerly LRRP) under the 75th:

6-man team
• Team Leader (E6, often 11F3P)
• Assistant TL (E5, 11B2P or 11F2P)
• Radio Operator (E4/E5, 11B1P/11F1P)
• Senior Scout (E4, 11B1P)
• Scout Observer (E3/E4, 11B1P)
• Alternate RTO or Grenadier (E3/E4)

A couple of things to note:

  1. 11B's are what're often refered to as "grunts". It's both a term of endearment, and an insult. 😎
  2. The Army eliminated 11F after Vietnam (early 1980s).
Modern structure absorbed its duties into:
    • 11B (Infantry)
    • 35-series (Military Intelligence)
    • Reconnaissance specialties inside Infantry units
    • 75th Ranger Regiment recon roles (Regimental Reconnaissance Company)
    • Cavalry Scout (19D) for mounted/dismounted recon

So in the modern Army, there are no soldiers with MOS 11F.

OK< this is getting kinda long, and WAY off the Bronco topic. Anyone interested in the history of the LRRP Teams and the Ranger Units and all of the unique jargon involved, we can take this private.

But the ones that we really care about are the acronyms like we have come to love.

Once in roll call, after the sergeant gave out assignments, he had some ridiculous missive (forget the subject) from HeadQuarters. It was ridiculous, so we're all looking at each other with "WTF" on our faces. The sergeant caught on, and said, "What can I say? People who make more money than me came up with this."

I learned some time ago, a lot of these things will just pass when that manager moves up--or on somewhere else. Then we go back to doing it the way things actually work. (Sometimes much sooner.)

But the ones that we really care about are the acronyms like we have come to love.

BOHICA _ Bend Over Here It Comes Again!

FUBAR - F'ed Up Beyond All Recognition

SNAFU - Some Negligent Army F Up

TARFU - Things Are Really F'd Up.

I use them pretty much every day, as well as the term Cluster F***!

Some of ours were SLIGHTLY different:
FUBAR - F'ed up beyond all Repair
SNAFU - Situation Normal, all F'ed up

Here's a few other we used to say a lot:
HURRY UP AND WAIT - Not an acronym, it's just what it sounds like and we spent a lot of time doing this
FOB - Five-Oclock Buffet, For a well-supplied forward operating base.
DILLIGAF - Do I Look Like I Give a F
PFM - Pure F'ing Magic
REMFS - Rear-Echelon Mother F'ers
FIGMO - F It, Got My Orders <-- Somebody going home soon and mentally gone. As in "he's FIGMO"
MFWIC - Mother F'er Who’s In Charge <-- Used sarcastically for officers who micromanage.

Then to tie it back to the earlier discussion, we had someMOS specific slang/terms of endearment 😎
11B - 11 Brain Cells
11F - 11 F'er in the Forest

RTO - Running Target Outfront

Here's some of the slang we used in the field:

"Tight and right” - Move clean, leave no sign, no noise, no light. Standard SFC directive.
“Stay in your lanes” - Don’t overstep your assigned sector of fire.
“Don’t skyline yourself” - Avoid silhouetting yourself on ridgelines.
“Tape it or lose it” - Everything must be taped down to eliminate noise: metal, buckles, sling swivels.
“Cut the sign” - Search for tracks, displaced vegetation, bootprints, droppings, etc.
“Ghost walk” - Slow, quiet infiltration—heel up, roll, pause, listen.
“No chatter” - Radio silence—the default for LRRPs unless absolutely necessary.
“Burn it in” - Transmit your coordinates clearly and slowly; no mistakes.
“Whisper lift” - Low-noise extraction by a slick flying nap-of-earth.

and my favorites ...

“Punching out” - Immediate extraction or break-contact.
“Bring the smoke” - Pop smoke for the bird. We were particular about color calls:
“Purple smoke! If it ain’t purple, call it out!”

There was a ton more, this is just a small sample. it was almost like its own language. Note that liberal use of the F word. It was used a LOT, and I have a tendency when things get sketchy to continue to use it a lot. For example: “This F'er F'ed up the F'in plan because he was F'in off, and now we’re F'ed.”

LOL ... I can still remember the pep-talk I gave before we headed into the field like it was yesterday:

“Alright, listen up. This F'in place is bad bush.
Point, don’t F it up.
RTO, keep that F'in antenna down— if they spot us, we’re F'ed.
Move quiet, move smart, and don’t go F'in wandering off.
If this trail looks F'ed, we peel right.
If we take contact, you F'in break clean.

Anybody F's around,
and I swear I’ll F'in’ retire you early.”
