Roof Top Tents

Hello all new to the forum and tried to search but did not find anything. My family and I enjoy the out doors and are looking to add a roof top tent to our 2024 4 door Badlands. I have been watching Off The Grind on YouTube. Has anyone else added a RTT? I'm looking for something that can sleep 2 adults 2 kids. Of course I want it to be as safe as possible. I'm new to RTT's and of course all recommendations are welcome.

There's plenty of options out there. Most are designed to sleep 2 people with comfort. I'd recommend a 2 person and a small ground tent for the kiddos. Keep in mind, if you find a large tent that can sleep 4, it's going to be very large and heavy. This can become an issue with removal and will throw off the vehicle dynamics. I've found the smaller and lighter the better. Basically, it's a winner if your Bronco drives like it's not there.

I run a solo tent with a small ground tent when my son comes along. 95% of the time I'm alone. I use the iKamper Blue Dot Voyager SOLO and love it. It comes in a duo as well. Here's a video I did with some buyer tips:

So there are two types of roof-top tents:

  • Hard shell - These come in a variety of styles, the most popular being the wedge/triangle-shaped tent.
  • Soft shell - These are effective ground tents... but on top of your vehicle.

Hard shells are typically the preferred choice. They a simpler design, more robust, withstand weather better, and allow you to mount extra stuff on top of the tent. BUT, the overwhelming majority of hard-shell tents that will fit on the Bronco sleep a maximum of two people, with room for maybe a small child or dog. So you're probably looking at a soft shell. Several companies also sell "hybrids"... but honestly they're just soft shell tents that pack into a hard shell. Provides more protection while the tent is packed up, but otherwise they're effectively soft shell tents.

This may be controversial, and I don't know if @B MIller would agree with me or not... BUT, honestly I would NOT get a soft shell or hybrid roof top tent. I would either stick with ground tents (far cheaper), or I would get a hard top tent for two people and a ground tent for the other two. Personally I do the latter, and the kids sleep in the roof top tent because they find it fun.

Great post and I agree 100% with everything stated above. Hard shell is the way to go. I'd avoid getting a tent that has a soft cover. Those are a pain in the a**. Hard shells simply latch closed and you are good to go.

Additionally, you will need a quality roof rack that can handle the Static but more importantly Dynamic load rating.

Not a RTT but basically a hard sided tent I pull behind me. This is a picture of its first test drive after I completed it. now it has a roof rack awnings and water heater. I was going to build a RTT like this to go on top but my boys are not really camping with us anymore.
BN 1100, Desert Sand Everglades. Reservation 7/30/20. ordered 1/22/21, reordered 10/15/21 dropped tow and hard top, reordered 3/9/22 changed to Everglades. production date 9/7/22 rescheduled 9/14/22 completed 9/26/22, shipped 10/7/22, arrived 10/31/22, delivered 11/03/22

It is an actual king size. I would say two adults and two small children. Has a lighting system as well.

I'm Trying to pick a rooftop tent. I'm have been between https://ikamper.com/products/skycamp-dlx
and

and

I like the roofnest since it has HVAC ports and it's huge. If I want to chase snow and go skiing I can port heat right in...

He also makes some super easy ones using a store bought tent.
I built a teardrop that I was going to build a RTT for the Boys but they are too old to go camping with mom and dad. But I did build his 270deg awning for the teardrop.

I am a DIYer don’t know how crafty you are but have you considered building one.
He also makes some super easy ones using a store bought tent.
I built a teardrop that I was going to build a RTT for the Boys but they are too old to go camping with mom and dad. But I did build his 270deg awning for the teardrop.
I saw that, but I want something that's a little bigger and more involved. I also want the comfort :-)
