When talking to people about cars/trucks, I often ask: "What was the very first vehicle you owned?"
Many people pause for a moment and then tell a story that takes them back in time.
It's kind of a personal memory that people generally like to share.

Mine was a 1968 VW Beetle that I bought for $600 in 1974.
It was a little rough - I had to push it down a slope and pop the clutch to start it when I went to pick it up because the battery was dead.
But I drove it from senior year H.S. through junior college days.
$5 worth of gas lasted a week or more. Fun car to drive and many good memories.

My 1st ever vehicle, when I was like 17, was a beat up and barely running Chevy El Camino..

My 1st off-road vehicle was a 1976 AMC CJ7 that I bought used in 1983.

The 1st new vehicle I ever purchased was a 1987 Jeep Wrangler YJ (it was hip to be square even though CJ owners hated it and gave me guff all the time)

My first car was a 1981 Pontiac Firebird, midnight blue with a special anniversary silver vinyl interior. And silver it was!!
I loved that car! Purchased used in the late eighties and financed at a ridiculously high interest rate as I had no credit going in, it was my pride and joy. I installed air shocks in the rear, dual exhaust with chrome tips, a hurst shifter, and a stereo system with a trunk full of subwoofers that made the whole car shake. I thought I was so cool, LOL!
I actually drove that car for 10 years before finally buying a new vehicle. It served me well.

1982 Chevy Monte Carlo. My folks picked it up for $500 from some acquaintance’s boyfriend. Would have looked like the pic more or less except for all the bondo and rattle can paint holding it all together. All the electrics were jury rigged; hilarity ensued on empty highways at night in the Michigan winter. Only 5 of the 8 cylinders fired and one working brake. But man, it was pure freedom to a 16 year old living out in the sticks. Met its end trying to kill me and I sold it to cover the tow.

1967 Pontiac Firebird... had 51998 miles on it the day I picked it up. Purchased from an old lady that had bought it new off the lot. Spent every extra dime I had on that thing.

Loved my 3 on the tree…

I was never very fond of them... Always had to fight the urge to crank the wheel in the opposite direction of the shift... I could drive them fine but sure preferred the floor shifter.

In 2005 my first vehicle was a 1995 Ford Ranger 2.3, 2WD, single cab short bed but it had power windows and locks which at the time I thought was awesome never really seen those before. Had 35K miles on it and I paid $1500 for it. Had been in a slight accident so the front fender needed replaced. Fixed it up with my grandpa and drove the wheels off of it. Think it had 150K miles when I sold it in 2010. Kid that bought it totaled it out a week later. Sure do miss that little truck.

1970 Ford Maverick. My Dad bought it for $160 in 1980. Straight 6 engine with automatic transmission, manual brakes, manual steering, vinyl bench seats, vinyl floor, no radio, LH outside mirror (RH was an available option). If you wanted some cool air in the summer you opened up vents in the foot wells. Built before emission standard requirements so it ran on regular i.e. leaded gas. Probably one of the most bare-boned vehicles ever sold. Ran on bias-ply tires that I swapped out with used tires that I bought at the service station when the belts started to show. Tried to get 2 matching tires on the front and 2 matching on the back (you never found a set of 4). Ah, those were the days....

A 1968 Cortina GT with four completely bald summer tires that I never changed out, and it only cost me $400. This amazing car cost me almost nothing in up keep, and got me up and down to Whistler every weekend in huge snow storms and never once got stuck or went off the road...

First car was a '64 Ford Falcon (The Flyin Falcon).
Bought used as a kid, it had a 170CI I6 with 3 on the tree.
Turned it into a 12 sec car after dumping in a 289, built C4 tranny, and a cut down Dana 60 in it, among other things.
That little thing was fun at OCIR brackets

1979 Ford pickup, puke green as I called it! (Not the one picture but nearly identical, saw this one not long ago and had to do a double-take). Purchased new for $3400! Had the 302 engine, I added dual exhaust with 12ā€ glass-packed cherry bomb mufflers then added a rear sliding glass window so I could hear it even better!! 🤣 Then I took off the stock rims and added keystone classics with Cooper G60’s. Last big mod I did was changing out the intake manifold and adding a 4-barrel carburetor! Man, were those some good times!

I had a 1957 F100 with a 3-on the tree. I can still feel the little bounce it took to drop it into third. Another plus was I could leave my doors unlocked and windows down since nobody could have figured out how to drive that dinosaur to steal itšŸ˜‚
