I trust the dirt

May 03, 2023

If you feel like saying it, say it!

One of my favorite off roading quotes:

"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, Wow! What a Ride!" - Hunter S. Thompson

I hope you’re right, but his background of financial mismanagement, drunkenness, and sexual misconduct certainly give me pause.

Sounds like multiple Presidents that I can recall through history.

I remember when partisans were rationalizing that their candidate's divorce wasn't relevant to their support.
Then certain partisans were explaining away their candidate's various liaisons was irrelevant, "We're voting for a president, not a pastor."
I think we're at the point where a politician's private life doesn't matter at all. 😞

Yeah, but there's a line I think no one, much less a candidate should cross. Sexual misconduct where you had to pay someone off, that MIGHT be over the line. But setting that aside, it's the financial mismanagement that really has me concerned. Hopefully he's learned since then.

Now, back to our regularly schedule quotes...

I'm a big Vince Lombardi fan, here's a couple of my favorite quotes:

“Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all the time thing. You don’t win once in a while… you don’t do things right once in a while… you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately so is losing.”

“The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.”

“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.” (I think that someone posted a variation of this earlier. I use this one with my team at work all the time when someone says something like "hey, we can't be perfect")

And, last but not least, my favorite response to the "everyone get a trophy" crowd:
“If it doesn’t matter who wins or loses, then why do they keep score?”

Funny how people are concerned with the morals of someone in charge of training people to kill people.

Enough with the politics it's banned remember.

I just started a screenwriting course at UMass/Boston. Not for this novel (a series, sequels in progress) but an Old Testament sword-and-sandal epic, starring Ahab! Jezebel! Elijah! modeled somewhat on "The Chosen." Title is "Fire On the Mountain," and the (promotional) logline is "Breaking Bad In Ancient Israel."

Maybe you can get Mel Gibson to play the lead.

Thanks for the encouragement, but no. Here's my gimmick: Biblical characters are always portrayed as mature, middle-age or older. My primary characters will be young, as the Bible does not specify their age. Ahab is about 22, with an insecure dynasty, vulnerable borders, incomplete fortifications, and hostile powers licking their chops. I think of Jezebel as Lady Macbeth in a drop-dead gorgeous body of 18-20. She has an agenda, and she abhors Israel's monotheism. Elijah is no white-bearded sage, but young, maybe 17-18, has no tact, confronts Ahab in the most impolitic manner, and is as frightened by his prophetic voice as he is of Jezebel.
Ahab is modeled somewhat on Walter White: a basically nice guy who loses his moral compass.
