Do you off road? Do you want free swag? Do you want a free onX Elite Membership?

Well, do you?

There must be a catch, right? Yup, there sure is. You need to press a button in the onX app to record the trail when you start it, then hit the button to end recording when the trail is completed. After that, you must upload the track to onX with a trail description, rating and a few photos. Oh, the trail has to be a new / unexplored trail so bust open your map and get your exploring hat on! One last requirement is that you need to complete the Tread Lightly on line course that's easy, quick and free.

After you submit your 1st trail, you'll get an onX Elite membership for free for a year. If you already have an onX subscription then it will get canceled, refunded and the free Elite plan will take over. The Elite plan retails for like $100 alone. Not a bad haul for a few minutes of work, eh?

But wait, there is more!

After you submit your 1st trail you'll also be given $20 in store credit to order some free swag. As a trail guide, everything in the store is also marked down 60%. With that discount, most shirts and hats are $10. So that $20 in store credit can get you 2 free shirts or a shirt and a hat, or whatever you'd like.

In addition to all that, they also have monthly freebies they give out if you map new trails within that month. Last month it was upload 2 new tracks and you get a free hat. Score!

Sounds good but I bet shipping on all that free swag is going to cost me, right? Nope. Shipping is also free.

Not enough?

After you upload your 1st track you get access to an area that has numerous discount codes from various companies. Upload 5 tracks in a year and you get access to the pro deals. The pro deals offer more companies and higher discount levels. Oh, and with that 5th track upload you'll also get $40 more in store credit to spend on swag.

Start here: https://www.onxmaps.com/offroad/trailguide

Pushing a button in the app to record the trail sounds like a lot of work you say? Consider what you get by submitting ONE trail a year. Submit 5 trails and you'll get even more.

One trail per year:

  • Free onX Elite Membership for the year
  • $20 in store credit (should score you 2 free shirts)
  • 60% off store items when you run out of the free credits
  • Discount galore
  • The satisfaction of helping others find cool trails that otherwise would be unknown.

Nothing specific about my application, just some pointers on what to include next time I apply.

When you resubmit, Just pay close attention on how you write your trail description and follow their advise / rules. Also make sure your photos comply with what they are asking for. No lazy from inside the vehicle photos, no photos through the windshield etc.

Look at other posted trails in your area (or anywhere for that matter) to get an idea of how to write the trail report and what the photos look like that were posted.

I don't know what their selection process is but you are not the 1st person I've heard of that was denied.

You'll get it next time! 💪 👍

I think maybe something that's unclear in the application is it just said to upload 5 of your favorite off-roading photos. My favorites and what they are looking for may not align so maybe they need to re-word the instructions.

They might not be the same / align with what they are looking for.

They want photos that show the trail conditions, awesome scenery, or other notable images. Also, do not submit any 'lazy' photos taken from inside the vehicle, photos that show the side mirror etc.

If they are asking for 5 photos, then have at least 4 that show trail conditions taken at different locations along the same trail.

When you write the trail report include conditions of the trail. Like mud, ruts, washouts, erosion, overgrowth, off-camber, ability to pass. etc. Also things like is it gravel, dirt, rocky etc. Is the trail narrow or wide? Do the trail conditions change the deeper you go down it, and if so, how do they change. Are there camping spots, notable area landmarks. Are there any interesting hiking trails in the area etc.

You get the idea..

Next time you submit, include photos that show trail conditions etc.. You can include a photo of your vehicle on the trail, just make sure it also shows the trail, trail conditions or includes some sort of cool scenery in the background..

Thanks @raqball for the advice! I'll use that on my next application.

I wonder if they are getting a little more stringent in who they choose to make a Trail Guide? Back when I applied, I don't recall having to send any pictures. Yes, I had to include them with my first trail submission, but not on my application. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what happened? Did your first trail submission get denied, or your overall application to become a Trail Guide?

When did you apply? I did it about 5 or 6 years ago when I had my Jeep and if I remember correctly, I had to submit photos and a 'test' trail report. I can't remember how many photos it was though..

Or I guess I could be thinking of something else as my memory is foggy at times but I am pretty sure I needed photos and a 'test' trail report back then.

You know what, you're right, I'm getting old and my memory isn't what it used to be so I went back through my old emails, etc. and found my original application. There was an application form that I had to fill out, and it included a trail description and some pictures. Since I lead a lot of trail runs it was pretty easy for me to come up with what they were looking for.

I can't recommend these classes enough. I've been using OnX for a couple of years and like @raqball I'm an OnX Trail Guide, and I always take the classes when they pop up. I learn some little nuggets every time I take one of these classes. They also help me keep up with the changes in the app as well. So, it doesn't matter whether you are a new OnX user, or an experienced OnX user, I think you will get something out if it to make the time you spend worthwhile.

Do they leave the classes up somewhere for viewing a recording? @raqball or @JoergH

At 5.00 CT on February 6th, I'll be in a deep anesthesiologist-induced sleep getting cut, drilled, dremeled, laser beamed, scoped, sharks gnaw on me, leaches used and whatever else the doc has planned for my bum left foot, destroyed achilles, and generally messed up left lower extremities. So, I won't be able to attend.
