The Red Dragon – mixing mud and bad decisions

Hey everyone,
First I'm posting on behalf of my husband who can't figure out an online forum but can problem solve a way out of just about anything...

We just got a 2024 4-door Black Diamond in Hot Pepper Red (including that because yes, I'm a girl and yes I bought it for that color) and I’m wanting to get it set up to flat tow behind our Allegro Bus.

The Bronco came with a WARN XD9000 winch already installed on what appears to be a frame-mounted aftermarket winch tray/bracket setup. We noticed the mount has matching holes/tabs on both sides that look like they may have been designed for recovery points or possibly tow attachments.

Before he does anything questionable, I wanted to ask anyone more experienced than us:

1. Does anyone recognize this winch tray/mount manufacturer? If not, can someone put us in the right direction on the easiest way to find the information...
2. Are these tabs/recovery points potentially usable for a flat tow setup?
3. Has anyone adapted a Blue Ox or Roadmaster setup to something similar?
4. Is there an easy way to verify whether the tray is truly tied into the frame horns and tow rated?

We are not trying to shortcut this and because of that I need to figure out what exactly we have. Is what I have usable for flat tow or do we need to start over with a baseplate? There has to be a way to incorporate flat towing with this setup, but if not, I'll have it torn down, but I really like how it looks. Will I ever actually use the winch, probably not...but my husband might....

Appreciate any help or identification info.

Welcome to the club. Hot Pepper Red is a killer color.

Good call posting those pics—that top-down angle seals the deal. You’ve got a bolt-on high winch mount (looks like Rough Country) bolted over the factory Capable Bumper.

Tell your husband to drop the tools. You definitely do not want to flat tow off those front tabs.

I built my rig from a bare-bones Base model up in NY and have wrenched on plenty of front ends. Here’s the deal: Winch trays and D-ring tabs are made for straight-line pulls. Looking at your top-down shot, that plate sticks out a lot from the bumper. Hooking a tow bar to that just creates a giant lever.

Flat towing a 5,000lb Bronco behind an RV creates massive side-to-side stress every time you turn or hit a bump. That tray doesn't have the cross-bracing of a Blue Ox or Roadmaster baseplate to handle those twisting forces. The bolts or the welds on those tabs will eventually snap. (Side note: you can already see rust starting on the top light-mount tabs—super common with the powder coating on these trays).

Bottom line: You can't safely adapt a tow bar to those tabs. If you want a winch and want to flat tow, that tray has to go. You either need a real baseplate setup, or you gotta bite the bullet on a full aftermarket bumper actually rated for flat towing (like LOD or Rock Hard).

You might want to look at the threads of the issues with flat tow and think about a trailer. If you need a new front bumper, flat tow equipment, etc. the odds are you can get a good trailer. I have not read one post that Ford covers flat tow damage. Just sayin.
