Thanks for posting, Raqball.
I just read through the email and the
blog post. I agree with the steps that need to be taken should land be sold, and I'm glad there's more transparency now through this mapping tool for the public to identify parcels up for sale.
This part makes sense to me:
"At TRCP, we believe America’s public lands are a shared legacy that should be retained for future generations to enjoy. While we strongly oppose large-scale transfers or sales of public lands, we recognize that small, community-driven land sales or exchanges can be appropriate. For us to support such proposals, they must:
- Clearly benefit local communities.
- Preserve or enhance existing hunting, fishing, and recreational access.
- Include a robust public process.
- Avoid disposal of lands with important fish and wildlife habitats.
- Ensure that proceeds from any sale are reinvested in conservation and public access."
I work a few hours at a state park here in Michigan for the DNR, and it's interesting how land is often traded between the state and county, but the areas I've learned about benefit locals and enhance rec access, and I appreciate that. So long as people can stay aware of proposals and get their chance to comment/petition, the process seems fair. I'd hate to lose land to put up a subdivision or store, or some misuse of the land for corporate gain.
