I received this in my email this morning from onX..

if you look at the map, a lot of these areas are usable and valuable to those who enjoy the great outdoors.

Hopefully, a lot of people will do this before it's to late and the land is gone...

Thanks for posting, Raqball.

I just read through the email and the blog post. I agree with the steps that need to be taken should land be sold, and I'm glad there's more transparency now through this mapping tool for the public to identify parcels up for sale.

This part makes sense to me:
"At TRCP, we believe America’s public lands are a shared legacy that should be retained for future generations to enjoy. While we strongly oppose large-scale transfers or sales of public lands, we recognize that small, community-driven land sales or exchanges can be appropriate. For us to support such proposals, they must:
  1. Clearly benefit local communities.
  2. Preserve or enhance existing hunting, fishing, and recreational access.
  3. Include a robust public process.
  4. Avoid disposal of lands with important fish and wildlife habitats.
  5. Ensure that proceeds from any sale are reinvested in conservation and public access."
I work a few hours at a state park here in Michigan for the DNR, and it's interesting how land is often traded between the state and county, but the areas I've learned about benefit locals and enhance rec access, and I appreciate that. So long as people can stay aware of proposals and get their chance to comment/petition, the process seems fair. I'd hate to lose land to put up a subdivision or store, or some misuse of the land for corporate gain.

Oh that BLM.😂

Put me down for a couple square miles, provided the land wasn't used for bomb testing and as long as I get mineral and/or logging rights. I even give the land back after recovering anything of value.

Like @Laura said, as long as it's a fair process where the people can be heard then I am fine with a sale if it goes through...

Do I want to see land get sold? No, but it's nothing new for BLM to sell..

From what I've seen this rule offers more input and local control. The Feds aren't exactly the paragon of equality and foresight, no matter who is in office.

Every acre for sale must have at least one windmill. 🤓

While I do know that government officials were trying to push through the selling off of millions of acres, namely Mike Lee of Utah, the proposal was shot down before it gained any real momentum. That doesn’t mean they won’t try again. It appears that the failed proposal was pushing to sell large areas of pristine land in I believe, Montana or Wyoming and may have been for less than altruistic reasons. That being said I am in favor of the federal government giving lands back to states to manage rather than the feds. Unfortunately the motives of the people involved in the federal or state management of said lands always have to be scrutinized in a very public forum. The main take away from this video is that we all need to stay involved in what is going on and we the public, the owners of this land, need to be good stewards of the land and be very involved with the stewardship. It starts on a local level. So get involved and give of your time. Look into Tred Lightly, The Sons of Smokey and other organizations that organize clean ups and the education of the public. I was just out on the trails here in Arizona this past Saturday and frankly I was appalled at the garbage left behind out in the sand flats and washes. Just disgusting. So before we start throwing out well to do political jabs remember this: there are plenty of good and bad players on both sides of the political spectrum. Everyone has their motivations and frankly they aren’t always in our best interests. Anytime money, or the chance to make money is involved, politics chooses what is best for them. Doesn’t matter which side.

What about foreign interests? Are these lands available for sale to say, oh I don't know, China? Is anyone free to just gobble up land for ore rights, rezoning, development, etc.?

BLM can only sell land to US citizens or US organizations.. I suppose there are probably workarounds but technically, no they can't sell to a foreign government or agency..

Well, that's sort of a relief. I mean, we're still talking about having 6 million acres of land to which we will no longer have access. Unless of course, we're the ones buying the land that's up for grabs.

Should I start a GoFundMe now? 😜

China has bought up large amounts of farm land. The current administration is trying to reverse that, with executive orders or legislation, I don't know which.
Bill Gates -- an advocate of world population reduction and open borders--is the largest owner of US farmland, something which concerns me a lot.

With 640 million owned by the feds, this represents less than 1% of federal lands…. Looking at the map it seems its broken up into many, many parcels, some of which have been slated for selling for decades…

Unfortunately money seems to grease the wheels of action at the higher levels of government (not a new thing), so moving control to the states or even counties would give more local control… Like so much of what happens in DC, money becomes the driving force and deciding factor…
