When talking to people about cars/trucks, I often ask: "What was the very first vehicle you owned?"
Many people pause for a moment and then tell a story that takes them back in time.
It's kind of a personal memory that people generally like to share.

Mine was a 1968 VW Beetle that I bought for $600 in 1974.
It was a little rough - I had to push it down a slope and pop the clutch to start it when I went to pick it up because the battery was dead.
But I drove it from senior year H.S. through junior college days.
$5 worth of gas lasted a week or more. Fun car to drive and many good memories.

1979 F-150, single cab (obviously) 6 cyl stick shift, 2wd. One week and four days later it was totaled in a rollover on a dirt road. Definitely a life lesson learned. The hard lessons are the ones not soon forgotten. Many after that. Never could find one i liked and kept more than a couple of years until i was in my early 40’s. 🐎

That’s easy. The first car I owned, and paid $525 for, was a 1968 Chevy Nova four door in black primer, powered by a straight six cylinder motor and automatic transmission. It needed a lot of work. Tires, brakes, and a steering wheel as the one that came with it was egg-shaped! LOL

It was nothing to write home about, but it was remarkable in that it gave me freedom and autonomy. I see one similar to this tooling around Seattle, and hope to speak to the owner some day.
Chris here. I drive a 2-door Velocity Blue 2023 Ford Bronco Badlands with Sasquatch, Lux, a 2.7L V6, and an automatic transmission. It’s fun.

It’s not having what you want. It’s wanting what you have.

1976 Chevy Monte Carlo. Bought for 600$. Silver exterior, red cloth interior, bench front seat, not a landau. Only work needed was left front quarter panel. Otherwise, it great condition. I wish I could find one again.

I loved those cars. Lots of them were destroyed in demolition derbys or sharp curves. 🐎

A Duster, can't remember the year. It was a newer one. I was 28. I was riding motorcycles first. Can't believe I survived especially when I wrote off a bike on the highway at 19.

1965 Chevy Corvair Monza. Pulled it out of a field, replaced the clutch, and then spent all one summer hand sanding the bad paint off and repairing holes with fiberglass and bondo. Then sent it to Maco for $99 paint job and spent another few weeks buffing the paint out so it looked decent enough for high school.

Drove a few vehicles that were "my responsibility", but weren't actually mine. In other words, I paid for everything... maintenance, fuel, insurance, etc... but they weren't legally in my name.

The first vehicle that actually had my name on the title was a 1991 Mercury Tracer, the slightly fancier version of the Ford Escort.

New looking (not mine, but identical):

Nope, well after unsafe at any speed. Photo was from around 1984 or so, maybe winter of 83. After that winter I replaced the stock 13" wheels and wire hub caps with 14" aluminum dished wheels and much bigger rubber (all purchased from a junk yard).
In 1964 Chevy redesigned the rear suspension borrowing from the Corvette of the time, switching to a trailing arm with camber compensators to eliminate the risk of the earlier suspension problems that were the subject of Nader's Unsafe at any Speed Book.

Due to the rear weight bias, it drove like a slot car.

1975 Mustang Notch Back Silver Ghia, 302. I bought if off my buddy when I was 14 for $1000. He needed the money to buy a 1966 Mustang Notch 289. it was in pretty bad shape but I fixed it up.

That is not a before and after the first pic is a parts car the second picture is the after. it was silver in color that had faded to a nice primer grey and it had the Maroon interior. when I was getting it painted the Body guy suggested I go darker since the silver was going to fade again so I had them paint it Charcoal grey. It was a fun car that taught me a lot about body work and working on motors, Sadly one day while I was at work some A-hole backed into it in the Parking lot (hit and run) and smashed the grill and pushed the radiator into the fan and bent the water pump. After all the work I had done to it for 2 years, I could not stand to do it again so I fixed the water pump and took the $2600 from insurance, and sold the car for $1350. and bought a 1985 Pontiac Grand Am 2-door. 😖

1972 Ford Mustang Fastback 351C 4 Speed manual trans, Bought it in 1983 when I was 15 (Dad did chip in some cash). Boy did I have some good times in that car, I racked up so many tickets (23pts) my junior/senior year that by the time PENDOT caught up with me I was already off to boot camp, ended up getting a CA licence when I got to my duty station. Had my dad sell the car while I was in CA, wish I wouldn't have.....

I was a massive AMC nerd when I was young and just thought the Eagles were the coolest thing ever. I ended up owning around 8-9 all said and done and still wish I had one. A 1st gen AMX is one of my bucket list cars too.
