Well, do you?

There must be a catch, right? Yup, there sure is. You need to press a button in the onX app to record the trail when you start it, then hit the button to end recording when the trail is completed. After that, you must upload the track to onX with a trail description, rating and a few photos. Oh, the trail has to be a new / unexplored trail so bust open your map and get your exploring hat on! One last requirement is that you need to complete the Tread Lightly on line course that's easy, quick and free.

After you submit your 1st trail, you'll get an onX Elite membership for free for a year. If you already have an onX subscription then it will get canceled, refunded and the free Elite plan will take over. The Elite plan retails for like $100 alone. Not a bad haul for a few minutes of work, eh?

But wait, there is more!

After you submit your 1st trail you'll also be given $20 in store credit to order some free swag. As a trail guide, everything in the store is also marked down 60%. With that discount, most shirts and hats are $10. So that $20 in store credit can get you 2 free shirts or a shirt and a hat, or whatever you'd like.

In addition to all that, they also have monthly freebies they give out if you map new trails within that month. Last month it was upload 2 new tracks and you get a free hat. Score!

Sounds good but I bet shipping on all that free swag is going to cost me, right? Nope. Shipping is also free.

Not enough?

After you upload your 1st track you get access to an area that has numerous discount codes from various companies. Upload 5 tracks in a year and you get access to the pro deals. The pro deals offer more companies and higher discount levels. Oh, and with that 5th track upload you'll also get $40 more in store credit to spend on swag.

Start here: https://www.onxmaps.com/offroad/trailguide

Pushing a button in the app to record the trail sounds like a lot of work you say? Consider what you get by submitting ONE trail a year. Submit 5 trails and you'll get even more.

One trail per year:

  • Free onX Elite Membership for the year
  • $20 in store credit (should score you 2 free shirts)
  • 60% off store items when you run out of the free credits
  • Discount galore
  • The satisfaction of helping others find cool trails that otherwise would be unknown.

Was already considering the Elite membership just for the Method Wheels discount. Maybe now I can save a little more! Thanks @raqball!

Enjoy!

I'd still do it even w/o all the freebies and swag as it helps others. I would not want someone going down an 8-10 rated trail in a bone stock Suzuki Samurai all because they didn't know it gets ugly about a mile deep..

Help others and get freebies and swag along the way. It's a win, win!

For anyone interested, onX offers free webinar Masterclass's pretty often. They'll cover how to find trails, save offline maps, share waypoints, make a route etc.

There is a class tomorrow evening that best I can tell, still has openings.

All you need to attend is a free onX account and to register for the class date you want to attend. If you are not familiar with onX then this is a great way to get started before you head out and start mapping trails. They last anywhere from about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how many questions get asked in the live chat.

https://www.onxmaps.com/offroad/masterclasses

If you can't attend a live class then you can watch previous archived webinars at any time by scrolling down that page to the 'Past Classes' area.

I was out on Saturday hitting a new (to me) trail in Lake Tahoe, CA - and turned on the 'track' feature, and verified several times over the course of 10 miles that it was still recording, then around 15 miles in, I noticed it was no longer recording my track, so I had to re-start the tracking feature, but lost the first 15 miles of the track :(
Also, how do you upload a track to OnX in the app?

I've not had any issue with loosing a track while recording but it could happen. If you went in and out of cell service and did not have off-line maps saved to your device then I can see this happening as maybe the phone or app got confused. Download off line maps ahead of time if you have not already done so.

I'd suggest attending an onX webinar. If you can't attend a live class then you can watch previous archived webinars at any time by scrolling down that page to the 'Past Classes' area.

https://www.onxmaps.com/offroad/masterclasses

If you have a track that's been completed then you don't need to do anything. It will upload / sync to onX automatically and will show as a new track (by date and time) in the web browser map. Edit, submit it to onX for approval etc via the web Trail Guide interface.

Here is an example of a track I submitted about a week and a half ago.

On the map notice the Blue dashed line, that is the new track that I recorded. You'll also see that it auto saved with the filename being the date and time.

Screenshot 2024-06-17 070925.jpg

Here is what that trail looked like after I submitted it. During the busy season (now) it can take a few weeks to a month to get approved. You don't need to wait for 'approval' to get the perks and swag as those are awarded when you 'submit' a trail. If for some reason the trail is rejected, you still get credit for it. ๐Ÿ‘

Last thing you need to worry about is the Samuri. Lived near the Rubicon trail head for many years. Samurai would be up there and people are like I can't believe that is up here. Well look at the front hubs. I haven't even locked in 4WD yet. Free wheeling.

Not so sure about that one. Back in the mid 80's I use to go out with an off-road club and one of the members had a mid 1980's Samurai. I think it was an 1985 or an 1986.

It was brand new'ish and bone stock. We were constantly having to recover it from mud, rocks etc. You name it, it got stuck! ๐Ÿ’€ ๐Ÿ’€

I think it came stock with 26" tires.. ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚

They were cute little 4x4's that's for sure but the bone stock one that dude has was atrocious off-road.. ๐Ÿ’€ ๐Ÿ˜ฌ ๐Ÿ’ฉ
If I recall correctly (kind of iffy at my age!) the Samurai was reviewed very harshly by Consumer Reports for being prone to capsizing.*

Yeah I remember something like that as well.

I've see videos of them doing Moab but then again I saw a video of a bone stock Kia Sorento doing Hells Gate.

Well I guess I'm not "experienced" enough to be a trail guide as they denied my application today. Wish we had more people using OnX in Arkansas as there are a ton of trails in the Ozarks that could be added.
